Fashion Center
New York's Garment District also known as the Fashion Center is located in downtown Midtown between the Flatiron district and Times Square-- 34th to 42nd Street, Bordered by Fifth and Ninth Avenues. The Garment District welcomed the 20th century as the center for fashion design and manufacturing and still retains its status as the fashion capital of the United States. While the local industry has waned, the Garment District is still a center for distribution, storage, and small cutting and sewing operations—most can be found on 39th and 40th Streets between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. These cater mainly to the apparel industry, but dedicated retail shoppers can still drive a hard bargain. With much of the industrial space converted to offices and the occasional residential loft, the area is mostly limited to basic businesses for workers and residents, with the exception of a few standout hotels such as the famous Ace Hotel and restaurants. Thanks to its central location, the area has very convenient access to public transportation.
